Introduction Craniosacral therapy (CST) is a gentle, non-invasive treatment that can provide profound benefits for babies. Originating from osteopathic practices, this therapy focuses on the craniosacral system—the membranes and fluid surrounding the brain and spinal cord. In this blog, we’ll explore what CST involves & its benefits for infants.

What is Craniosacral Therapy? CST involves light touch techniques that help to release tension in the body’s tissues alleviating discomfort and improving wellness. Practitioners use their hands to evaluate the craniosacral system and identify areas of restriction. This gentle hands-on therapy can facilitate healing and improve the baby’s well-being.

Benefits of Craniosacral Therapy for Babies

  1. Relief from Birth Trauma: Babies often experience physical, mental & emotional stress during delivery whether they arrive by natural, assisted natural or cesarean births. CST can help alleviate tension in the skull and spine, promoting comfort and healing.
  2. Improved Sleep Patterns: Many parents report that CST helps their babies sleep better, as the therapy can induce relaxation and reduce discomfort.
  3. Improve feeding: Improving & correcting cranial bone alignment post birth allows for correct latching and feeding to happen.
  4. Enhanced Digestive Function: CST can support digestive health by helping to relieve tension in the abdomen and encourage better digestion.
  5. Support for Common Conditions: CST is often used to address issues like colic, reflux, and ear infections, providing a natural approach to care.

What to Expect During a Session During a CST session:

  • Observation: I will observe your baby’s movements and demeanour.
  • Gentle Touch: Using light pressure, I will assess the craniosacral system for restrictions and tension patterns then use gentle techniques to relieve tension in various tissues as needed.
  • Relaxation Techniques: The session often promotes relaxation, helping the baby feel secure and calm.

I recommend you bring a small blanket and toy(s) that your baby loves to help them settle during their treatment. However there is no expectation that your baby will lay still all the time during this treatment. I thoroughly appreciate this is unlikely to happen all the time and treatment can be done whilst they are in any position, be that seated, feeding or laying down. Their comfort is my number one priority.

When to Consider Craniosacral Therapy Parents may consider CST if their baby shows signs of discomfort, has difficulty feeding, experiences excessive crying, or has been diagnosed with conditions that benefit from gentle touch therapy.

Conclusion Craniosacral therapy can be a supportive, gentle option for babies experiencing discomfort or distress. By understanding its benefits and seeking qualified practitioners, parents can help promote their baby’s health and well-being.
